I offer consultancy and mentoring on a freelance basis to support research at individual and institutional levels, including project development, writing and REF.

Research

I am currently writing a book entitled, Entries in Time, on the multiple temporalities of everyday life. Watch this space!

I have undertaken sociological research in a range of settings – including care work, construction, and fish markets.

My recent project, A Day at a Time, in collaboration with Mass Observation, explores the experience of time in everyday life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I am a member of the Editorial Board of two academic journals: Time & Society and Qualitative Research.

Leadership

I have held several major strategic academic leadership roles at the University of Kent where I worked for close to 20 years.

At Kent, I co-led the REF 2021 submission for Social Work and Social Policy. The UoA was ranked 3rd nationally by The Times Higher for the quality of research, up from 5th place in 2014.

As Director of Research & Innovation for the Division for the study of Law, Society and Social Justice, I developed R&I strategy and bespoke policy, fostered an enabling and vibrant environment for research, and increased income generation.

Career

I am Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent and Visiting Professor at the University of Sussex.

I previously held positions at the University of Essex, the European University Institute, Paris V, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and the University of Birmingham.

I completed my PhD in Sociology at the European University Institute in 2003.

I have been a Visiting Scholar at Cardiff University, the Australian National University, the University of Manchester, the University of Cagliari, and Goldsmiths, University of London.
